The dust has well and truly settled where Flatpack no.10 once was (most of it Birmingham Central Library debris), and the foundations for Flatpack no.11 are firmly in place. Now we just need some films… For the next five months we’ll be open for submissions, so take a look at the details below, complete the form and send us your short films. As always the programme will celebrate film in all its permutations, from animated curiosities, to weird and wonderful music promos, to celluloid installations, to cerebral video essays, with just about everything in between. The festival takes place in venues all over Birmingham, UK, and runs from 4-9 April 2017.

Our short film strand currently has 5 coveted awards up for grabs, with more on the cards (announcements soon):

– the Short Film Award;
– the WTF Award;
– the Audience Award;
– the Colour Box Award;
– the Colour Box Audience Award;

The film selected by the jury as the winner of the Short Film Award will receive £1,000. All successful submissions will be included in the programme at Flatpack no.11.

Submissions should be:

– films under 20 minutes long;
– completed since January 2015;
– fully cleared, including any music rights.

We screen all types and genres of film but the programme has a slight emphasis towards animation, music, documentary, experimental work, handmade oddities, and that kind of thing. You can see the previous winners from the last four festivals here: 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013. If you’d like to submit, please complete the form below and you’ll be redirected to paypal to make the £10 submission payment. Please note that any submissions received without the £10 fee will not be considered.

The film should be viewable online. If you need to send us another format please get in touch before submitting. The deadline for submissions is 6pm on Friday 20 January 2017 . The full programme will be announced in March 2017 and we’ll let you know whether you have been successful or not before the programme goes live.

If your film is longer than 20 minutes or is more of an installation or performance piece and you’d like to submit to the festival, drop us a line at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
